For the third year in a row, we have the opportunity to celebrate a remarkable individual who makes our community vibrant and connected through the arts. It’s my great privilege to introduce this year’s recipient of the Community Arts Builder Award, a person whose work and spirit embody the very best of New Westminster: Johanna Bartels.
Johanna is a graphic designer by profession, but her contributions to our community extend far beyond her creative talents. She has been a dedicated member of our Cultural Crawl Committee, shaping one of New Westminster’s most biggest artistic events and a constant source of support in all we do. But Johanna doesn’t stop there!
Over the years, Johanna has volunteered with organizations such as Family Place, the Farmers Market, NewWest TV, and the New West Chamber of Commerce. She has also served on the boards of the Westend Business Association, and New West Film Festival.
Johanna is also a founding force behind the New West Latin American Women Artists Group (Hijas del Sol) , creating a vital platform for voices that enrich our city’s cultural tapestry.
Her dedication to championing artists in New West is nothing short of inspiring. Johanna has her pulse on the needs and aspirations of our community. Whether through her steadfast advocacy for artists or her willingness to roll up her sleeves to bring a vision to life, she leads with passion and integrity.
In 2023, Johanna was nominated for Citizen of the Year in New Westminster—a testament to her deep commitment to making our city a better place. She’s known for being direct and practical, always ready to ask, “What can we do to improve?” and just as ready to dive in and help make it happen.
Johanna believes in the power of art to bring people together, and she lives that belief every day. Her passion for community and her unwavering dedication to the arts inspire us all.
So, please join me in congratulating Johanna Bartels, the well-deserved recipient of the Community Arts Builder Award. Johanna, thank you for all you do to enrich our city and bring us closer together through art.
