Exhibition Statement

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1944, Ron Straight was raised in foster care and spent much of his early years in solitude, a theme reflected in his artwork. He discovered his talent for art in high school, winning contests, and later pursued formal training at Balfour Technical School.

In 1969, Ron moved to Vancouver, where he worked in various creative fields, including as a graphic artist and window dresser. His artistic journey took a pause as he focused on his career and family, but he continued to photograph and gather ideas.

In 2003, Ron uncovered his Ojibway heritage, learning he had six half-siblings from the Brokenhead Reserve. This discovery added new layers to his identity and artistic expression. After years of stepping away from painting, he returned to his passion, experimenting with various techniques and exploring diverse themes.

Ron’s work is deeply personal, often reflecting his experiences as a loner, shaped by his youth and relationships. He has recently shared his work in multiple shows, focusing on abstract narratives rather than figures.

Outside of his art, Ron is passionate about sports, particularly curling and fastball, and has been a dedicated coach for over two decades.

A member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and AFC, Ron continues to explore and evolve his art, embracing the richness of his life’s journey.
