PUBLIC ART: Call for Artists – Morgan Crossing – Deadline: March 20, 2020

Organizers:
The Shops at Morgan Crossing is located in the heart of South Surrey. The shops at Morgan Crossing is a vibrant outdoor shopping centre offering a unique collection of independent retailers, fashion outlets, restaurants, and cafés.

Overview:
An opportunity exists to create a public art piece in the exterior public realm of the shopping centre for
intervention with visitors. The intervention should activate the public realm with an innovative and
potentially interactive public artwork. The objectives of the project are:

  1. To be a defining feature of the shopping centre
  2. To develop a sense of place, community pride and identity
  3. To reflect artistic diversity and creativity
  4. To serve as a visionary piece for the citizens of South Surrey and surrounding communities
  5. To inspire visitors
  6. To enhance the appearance and experience of the shopping centre

The artist will be responsible for design of the artwork; fabrication and installation of the artwork may be by the artist or by others, depending on the nature of the artwork, but the fabrication and installation is to be included in the overall project budget.

The Shops at Morgan Crossing will commission one or more professional artist(s) and/or artist team(s) to create a concept that will be meaningful for The Shops at Morgan Crossing. The winning design element could be located at various locations within the shopping centre. The intent is for the artworks to be a permanent display and legacy of the 10th anniversary celebration and revitalization plan of The Shops at Morgan Crossing.

Artwork must be for installation on the ground and suitable for outdoor weather.

The Shops at Morgan Crossing is located at 15765 Croydon Drive (at 24th Avenue), Surrey, BC.

Artist Criteria for Submissions:
Submit proposals of artwork along with a budget that includes the cost of creating the design, fabrication, installation and insurance to jng@strathallen.com. Please be sure to include digital images.

Please provide a clear and concise statement explaining which areas you are proposing your art to be exhibited with a budget for creating, fabricating and installing the artwork.

An artist Statement giving your aims and objective as an artist in relation to your work.

The intent is to award the fabrication and installation of the artwork to the artist of the selected submission.

Deadlines for submission is 4:00pm on Friday, March 20, 2020

Selection Process:
The Selection Committee will meet to consider all submissions received. All applicants will receive a
reply by email, stating whether the work has been accepted. If your application has been successful, you will be contacted by telephone, exhibition details will be confirmed, and a contract will be sent to you.
This contract will outline your responsibilities and providing other details and dates.

Budget
The total budget available to artist(s) team is $50,000. The artwork budget must be inclusive of all costs including (but not limited to) artist fees, studio overhead, consultant fees (structural, electrical, etc.), artwork fabrication, site preparation, travel, transportation, traffic control, installation, all taxes and general liability insurance.
