Artist Statement
The Artists in the Boro group had its first meeting in January 2011 and has gathered regularly ever since. We welcome those working in any visual medium (painting, drawing, jewelry, photography, sculpture, textiles, glass, ceramics, etc.) at any level of skill, experience or development. We are here to share with, encourage and learn from each other in a supportive environment.
The group’s mandate/purpose statement: “Artists in the Boro is a group inclusive of all visual art media, which endeavours—through meetings, public events and other forums—to discover, promote and celebrate the talents of artists residing, working in, or otherwise affiliated with the unique community of Queensborough in New Westminster, BC.”
Our focus is not solely to show and sell our own work—it is also to play a strong role in promoting and fostering the visual arts within our local community, and to support their vital role in the City of New Westminster.
Artists in the Boro participates in displays and exhibits at various events and venues, such as the Queensborough Children’s Festival, the BC Cultural Crawl (including the Art in Bloom & English Tea Party at the Port Royal Community Garden), and RiverFest at the Westminster Quay.
We have had group exhibits at the main branch of the New Westminster Public Library and the Anvil Centre, and hold annual Spring Fling for Art and Christmas Art and Craft Sale events in April and November.
To date, we have held hands-on workshops on creating Artist Trading Cards, as well as life drawing with instructor Shelley Rothenburger and string painting sessions led by AB member Ginny Bryson.
The work of Artists in the Boro members is exhibited in the Queensborough Community Centre’s Art in the Atrium gallery space on an ongoing basis. Currently we are featuring an exhibit of paintings, drawings mixed media work and photography called Abstractions, which runs until November 27, 2015.
We meet on the third Tuesday of the month (except December) at 7:00 pm in the Poplar Room at the Queensborough Community Centre (920 Ewen Avenue) and are always eager to welcome new artists.
