EXHIBIT STATEMENT
The Legislature Series comprises thirteen oil paintings, one for each Provincial and Territorial legislature building. The intersection of visual art and architectural representation is an area of investigation in Trevor’s art practice. Conceptually, these paintings present a critical yet playful reading of the Legislature Buildings as seats of power in a time of cultural reckoning of the symbols of colonialism, where monuments are increasingly being questioned. These paintings ask, in their playful reimagining, that we approach these symbolic buildings of power with a critical lens. As such, each painting in its making and exhibiting is an act towards both a shared cultural and personal decolonization.
Trevor is a visual artist based in New Westminster, British Columbia. Being drawn to visual culture from a young age he completed courses in art, graphic design, and drafting. This led to a year studying in London, U.K. on a unique Foundation Course where art, craft, and architecture merged. Following this he completed a Diploma in Fine Arts from Langara College and then a BFA in Visual Art from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. He currently works out of Studio 7 at Braid Studios, 3rd floor – 321 6th Street in New Westminster.
